Prom Tips from a Real Florist

Prom Season!  We love it, we dread it, but we need to embrace it.  It's a quick season, easy to prepare for, and quite profitable.

Read on as florist Diane Marquardt shares her best prom tips from 35 years in the floral industry.

  • It's wise to plan ahead and advance prep as much as you can.  The items are small so they don't take up a lot of space.  It's easy to use up pieces of ribbon and mix-and-match jewels and accents, as every order can and should be different.
  • It's helpful to have some artificial corsage samples on display.  They can try on different sizes and bracelet styles, and if they buy them, it's one less order to make later!
  • A quick questionnaire is helpful when the prom clients call or come in to the shop.  Simple questions such as name and phone number, date and school, but also who their date is, dress color, accent metals or stones, and tux color.  This is also a great place to account for pricing of additional add-ons.
  • Ask them to text you a photo of their dress if needed.  It's a simple way to get the color right while making them feel special.  Teens can text in the blink of an eye so this is an easy request.
  • Once the orders are placed, match up the couples if they didn't order together.  You can begin to prep the wristlets with ribbon.  This is a great time to make sure you're not duplicated at the same school. Ordering the fresh product for prom is also easier to do once you have all these details.
  • Once your orders are complete and prom day is here, make sure you've given specific pick up times.  A quick text to any stragglers will get a fast response for picking up their order.  Make sure you are packaging their corsage boxes in a pretty gift bag with tissue and ribbon.  This is a special day and they have made an important purchase.
  • Ask them to tag your shop in photos or simply to text them to you with permission to use on social media.  Perhaps enter them into a drawing if they share a photo.
  • Make it a fun experience for them, as this is your chance to teach them to be lifelong flower buyers.  It's an honor to say that your prom customers have come back for graduation, weddings, baby showers, and other special events in their lives. This is the greatest compliment!
  • Embrace it!
