Foliage is the foundation of the arrangement. Literally. One of the first skills you learned as a floral designer was creating the base. Starting with greens to establish the shape and dimensions of your arrangement, you likely reached for leatherleaf fern or Ficus branches. These economical, versatile choices helped you learn your way. But there is so much more to Ficus than the base to hide your mechanics. This greenery does so much more.
And, when it comes to any foliage, faux varieties look more realistic than ever and give you major benefits. Many florists opt for high-quality artificial Ficus branches as they are easy to shape, maintain a fresh appearance longer, and your customers have a pet-friendly, hypoallergenic, easy-care design. Consumers are even used to the look of Ficus indoors in artificial trees and plants, so using the foliage offers familiar aesthetic appeal.
Still, we can challenge ourselves and our customers to see Ficus in a new way. To inspire your creativity, here are some ways that our professional design team and customers have used artificial Ficus.
A Pioneer Exclusive, we've designed mini Ficus bushes with professionals in mind. We know you need foliage to add texture, shape, and color, but the scale is extremely important to balance your design. Mini Ficus takes the familiar oval-shaped, dark green leaves and offers an exceptionally delicate, compact version of the species. Mini Ficus foliage can add soft texture and subtle draping to bouquets, clutch bouquets, corsages, and boutonnieres, where proportion is key. Artificial mini Ficus provides a harmonious element, highlighting focal flowers.
Greens-only bouquets are trending because of their natural elegance. Brides are increasingly seeking these organic, fresh looks that draw inspiration from nature. However, when creating a foliage-only bouquet, the key to success is contrast. Foliage-only designs require a variety of color, size, and texture. The best designs are those that incorporate good contrast, and the variety available with artificial Ficus—both dark green and variegated, as well as the mini Ficus bushes—provides the tools for success with these looks.
Artificial Ficus is a cost-effective way to enhance a wreath design. The graceful lines of a Ficus branch can be inserted to extend beyond the wreath form, creating a more organic shape. Cutting apart the bushes is simple, and the branches are sturdy enough to insert into wreath forms without the labor and cost of wiring and picking. Having a supply of artificial Ficus on hand will serve you well, as its color and shape are versatile year-round for any seasonal wreath or color palette.

Because of the pyramidal shape of artificial Ficus bushes, they are ideal for garlands. Widest at the bottom and tapering to a fine point, the branches can extend a premade garland, creating a finished look at its beginning and end. Likewise, using them to assemble your own garland provides a broad span of leaves, offering a base for other floral materials. Their array of leaves makes them ideal for garlands that run down tables as centerpieces. When intertwined with flowers and other foliage, they create an effect of fluidity and movement down the table.
You are likely familiar with Ficus’s use in monument and commercial design, and that is for a good reason! Seen as a sign of peace, Ficus foliage provides fullness and enhances the florals used in these types of designs. Artificial Ficus also offers abundance to otherwise sterile offices, providing a low-maintenance natural oasis. On both occasions, Ficus provides a lushness, elegance and charm.
Because it is so economical and amiable, Ficus greens allow more expensive focal flowers to stand out. It helps fill gaps without significantly increasing the overall cost of arrangements. All of this makes Ficus a foundational design tool.
While Ficus does provide a natural base, think beyond its foundational role. This versatile, durable cousin of natural foliage offers much more—bringing rich form, texture, and color to a wide range of designs. Challenge your perception of inexpensive greens by recognizing the many creative possibilities Ficus presents.
