How and Why to Host Hands-On Spring Floral Design Classes

How and Why to Host Hands-On Spring Floral Design Classes

The Hands-On Market

You may have noticed “sip and paint” studios opening in your town – where guests can drink wine, chat with friends and get to know other community members, all while creating art that they can take home. While they may be growing in popularity, IBISWorld reports COVID impacted the success of these businesses, and they have experienced falling revenue the past 5 years. It’s true: a stand-alone business of solely hands-on classes is difficult to maintain. However, hands-on classes may provide an opportunity for an additional revenue stream to florists, garden centers and boutiques who already have the space, staff and supplies.

While a business that only provides experiences can be difficult to maintain, there remains much interest in gifting experiences to colleagues, friends and family. The market for experience gifts has grown in the past decade, and with an increased focus on wellness, adults are understanding the necessity for “play” – being intentional to find time for creating art to boost health and reduce stress.

The Profitability of Design Classes

Florists can host after-business-hours floral arrangement classes for consumers and immediately sell 10 arrangements that customers design themselves.

How To Start

  1. First select your event day when you can support additional traffic and not let it derail your usual business.
  2. Select a staff member to be the teacher.
  3. Determine how your class should feel: Are you creating a luxurious night out with wine and flowers? Are you making a family-friendly spring design? Or something in between?
  4. Select the design that will be used.
  5. Calculate your ticket price. Consider the cost of the arrangement, staff time, and profit margin. Price your tickets based on the perceived value of the event rather than the traditional percentages.
  6. Open ticket sales at least 30 days before the class.
  7. Promote your class on your website, social media, local message boards, enewsletter and any other way you reach your community.
  8. Order the supplies you need from Pioneer Imports & Wholesale, so you have everything on hand and ready.

How to Sell Tickets

If you have an ecommerce site for your business, you can add a design class like any other item. Describe the event, set a price, and allow people to purchase tickets on your current platform.

If you do not sell on your business website, platforms like Eventbrite allow you to easily create an event and collect ticket sales. There are other similar platforms as well.

You may elect to take walk-ins to a design event. For example, if your shopping plaza is having a “sidewalk sale” or other event, a create-your-own design booth is a great way to capture this foot traffic.

Design Ideas

Here are a few arrangements that can be taught to beginners in your hands-on design event. Ideal for spring, they are also easy to carry home. Plus, everything you need can be purchased in one order from Pioneer, saving you time and keeping you organized!

  1. Adorn Your Door: Use one of our pre-made greenery wreaths and offer a selection of accessory products such as spring flowers, ribbon, and butterflies.
  2. Bring on Spring: Use a flower basket and a couple of bushes, teach the basic principles of rhythm and color harmony as they create a springtime arrangement for their tabletop, porch, or patio. https://www.pioneerwholesaleco.com/media/InfoPages/DesignGaller/by_hydrangea-ranunculus-3512.jpg
  3. Plant Parenting (no green thumb required!): This idea allows you to teach the elements of texture and movement without having to teach an extensive course in the principles and elements of design. It also capitalizes on the plant trend without your attendees having to worry about care and maintenance https://www.pioneerwholesaleco.com/media/InfoPages/Greenery/by_greenery-livingroom.jpg
