Video: Mini Cabbage Roses & Terrazzo Containers

In this quick video, Tom Bowling AIFD PFCI creates a fresh and fun arrangement using versatile on-trend components – a variety of silk roses and the beautiful Terrazzo bowl, both from Pioneer Imports & Wholesale.

The beautiful Terrazzo bowl is a true delight. The surface is dimensional with its varied coloration, the colors subtle but expressive. This composition pulls from those hues with grace.

Tom will be using silk flowers in warm cream and rich blush pink. The silk mini roses are especially interesting, ideal for corsage work and event work, or any design where you might want the timeless elegance of a rose in a smaller footprint.

Artificial zebra grass will serve as a smart complement. These artificial mini grasses are a hot item on the market right now, and this arrangement highlights just one way to use this trend-forward permanent foliage option.

First, Tom works with the artificial zebra grass. He begins placing each small spray bundle around the edges of the container – this will set the parameters for the arrangement size, informing all the insertions that will come next. As he works the taller pieces into the center, he sometimes bends the stems to serve as a sturdy anchor.

Tom moves onto the larger of the silk rose varieties next, the silk English garden roses. These larger pieces will create much-needed variation in texture and shape in this monobotanical composition. He trims the stems down to size, setting the extra silk foliage aside for a moment.

He makes his silk rose insertions and then adds those artificial foliage sections individually. The dark, round shapes serve as fantastic contrast to the wispy silk grasses.

Next, Tom works his way over to the small silk mini cabbage rose in cream. He separates the bush into singles and pairs – the pair insertions make the composition come together so much more quickly. He gently bends the stems to give each a more organic, garden-grown look.

The reason Tom chose the cream selections first is so that he can get a better view of the negative space left to work with, using the blush-colored silk cabbage rose to break up any expansive groupings. His careful insertions give each pink silk rose a chance to stand out.

With the mini silk rose insertions, you can see how the larger silk English rose becomes more of a depth element rather than a foreground interest.

The result has an abundance of dimension and variation for a monobotanical design, an inspiring composition that puts the beauty of silk mini cabbage roses on display.
