Shrink wrap caps are a simple way to get a clean-looking finish when preparing taller gift baskets. In this video, follow along with Susan Huelsman AIFD as she demonstrates how quick and easy this technique can be. Using supplies readily available from Pioneer Imports & Wholesale, Susan shrink wraps a tall gift basket filled with cheese and wine before completing the arrangement with a gorgeous bow. 

Susan begins by preparing the shrink wrap cap for placement. To reduce the amount of static cling and make application easier, she wraps one hand with a dryer sheet and runs it along the inside of the cap. What a handy trick! She then places the cap over the basket, taking the edges down to the lowest point, and tucks each edge carefully beneath the bottom of the basket.

Susan suggests aligning the seam as close to the top midline of the basket as possible, but you could also try to align the seam toward the back if the top is not possible. The seam should run straight across the basket for the best look.

After everything is neatly aligned and tucked under the basket, Susan starts up the heat gun. She begins shrinking along the bottom edge of the basket before slowly making her way up the sides. Try to work each side evenly. As the wrap begins to tighten, you can use your hand to stabilize taller products like wine bottles. As Susan points out, take care to avoid leaving the heat on perishable items, like cheeses, for too long.

Once you are finished heating, double check the bottom edges to make sure they’re nice and secure. A coordinated bow is the perfect way to wrap up the presentation of a gift basket like this – Susan takes a length of ribbon around the bottom of the basket and ties the bow to the top, trimming excess ribbon for a neat and tidy appearance.
