Raising the Bar: Why Hanging Florals Are Taking Center Stage in Event Design

Raising the Bar: Why Hanging Florals Are Taking Center Stage in Event Design

In recent years, event florals have quite literally reached new heights. From lush ceiling installations to floating floral chandeliers, the trend of hanging flowers has become a favorite among event planners and floral designers — and for good reason. These dramatic overhead displays instantly transform a space, creating a sense of immersion, elegance, and wonder.

Hanging florals also solve common event design dilemmas: Will a centerpiece take up too much table space? Will it obstruct guests' views? Floral chandeliers free up tables and sight lines while making an even more dramatic impact. They draw the eye upward, add dimension, and make even the simplest venue feel curated and bespoke.

If you’re designing a hanging floral piece for the first time — or simply looking for a fresh, easy option — this artificial Gypsophila Orb is sure to become a favorite in your repertoire.

Why Baby's Breath Deserves the Spotlight

The simplicity — yet depth — of baby’s breath invites people to pause, look up, and be inspired. Using a single variety of flower creates a fresh, modern aesthetic. This delicate, airy bloom in its neutral hue works beautifully for both day and night, formal and casual events, and styles ranging from bohemian to minimalist.

And the best part? No wilting, no mess, and absolutely no floral funk — we're talking high-quality faux gypsophila that looks every bit as dreamy as the real thing.

Traditionally seen as a filler flower, baby’s breath has had a major glow-up in recent years. With its cloud-like clusters and ethereal aesthetic, gypsophila can easily stand out as the star of any arrangement. Especially when used en masse — like in this show-stopping orb chandelier — its delicate white blooms bring softness, romance, and elegance to any setting, from weddings to upscale dinners to photo backdrops.

How We Created This Stunning Floral Orb Using Artificial Gypsophila

Materials We Used:

  • 50 bushes of artificial gypsophila (Item no: PWB2153WH)
  • 1/2-inch hardware cloth (wire mesh)
  • Wire cutters
  • Gloves (optional, but helpful for handling mesh)
  • Hanging mechanism (chain or fishing line)
Step-by-Step: Building the Floral Orb

1. Shape the Frame:
Start with your ½-inch hardware cloth. Cut and shape it into a ball. We used enough material to form a sphere about the size of a volleyball. This will be your base structure — think of it as a wire cage that holds the florals in place while maintaining a light, airy look. Don’t worry about achieving a perfectly round shape; the blooms will cover any small imperfections.

SIDE

2. Prep the Artificial Baby’s Breath Bushes:
Keep each stem grouped as a bush — no need to cut them apart.

Take each artificial gypsophila bush and give it a good fluff. This step is key to achieving that full, cloud-like effect. Use your fingers to gently spread and lift each branch, working from the center outward. Gently bend the stems to loosen the leaves from the main branch and create natural curves. Don’t aim for perfect symmetry — allow forks and variation in the branches. Real flowers grow wildly, so embrace a touch of natural irregularity in the shape of your artificial blooms.

3. Insert the Florals:
Bend the stem of each bush at a 90-degree angle. This simple trick helps secure the stems firmly once inserted into the mesh. Begin inserting each bent bush into the holes of the hardware cloth, lowering each hooked stem into place. Work your way around the sphere, filling in the mesh grid evenly. The result should be lush and dense — a floating ball of baby’s breath that looks effortlessly chic.

With our hardware cloth core and 18" stems, the final orb extended more than four feet across.

4. Hang and Admire:
Once your floral insertions are complete, attach your hanging mechanism. Hook into the center of the hardware mesh. Chains offer the most support and lend an industrial-chic vibe, while clear fishing line provides strength while staying invisible — making the orb appear to float. Hang it at your desired height at the event location.

Artificial baby’s breath also offers practical advantages for transport. Unlike fresh flowers, they’re lightweight, durable, and not sensitive to temperature or handling. This makes them easy to pack, move, and install without the risk of wilting or damage. Their consistent appearance ensures your arrangement looks fresh and vibrant upon arrival — making them a reliable, hassle-free option for event planners.

Why Faux Makes Sense

Unlike fresh gypsophila, these blooms don’t carry the strong, often unpleasant scent that can overwhelm enclosed event spaces. Plus, there’s no shedding or browning — your arrangement will stay pristine from the first guest’s arrival to the last dance.

For professional event designers, artificial flowers offer a range of strategic advantages that fresh blooms simply can’t match. One of the biggest benefits is the ability to design well in advance — no need to wait until the day before to start assembling arrangements. This flexibility reduces last-minute stress and allows for better planning. Faux florals also eliminate concerns about wilting, browning, or drooping in hot or unpredictable temperatures, making them ideal for both indoor and outdoor installations. They're lightweight, reusable, and consistent in color and shape — especially valuable for large-scale or multi-day events.

This project is a perfect example of how a single silk floral element, when used creatively, can make a major impact. So next time you’re designing for an event, don’t relegate baby’s breath to the background — let it shine and take full advantage of the beauty and benefits of silk flowers.
