The Emergence of Floral Pocket Squares from a Full-Service Florist
“I had my first pocket square request from a client two years ago – then last year had more than five times that many requests,” said Melissa Henderson of Tully Floral Design.

“When I began mentioning upgrading the groom, or the groom and the fathers to a pocket square, practically all my couples upgraded to pocket boutonniere,” continued Melissa. “I mention that it really emphasizes the person when they have that pop of floral.”
It’s an easy explanation that resonates and sells the style.
Pocket squares also work with today’s special event fashion. In lieu of a necktie, a floral pocket square dresses up a suit with natural elegance. This is particularly interesting at a beach or garden wedding. Here the groom or bridal party may not be wearing ties, but still want to have an elevated look for the occasion.
For anyone who was considering wearing a traditional silk pocket square, those can be intimidating. Do people really know how to fold and style them? Floral pocket squares can be sized perfectly using the latest design tool, and slide right in with no fuss. A floral pocket square also has the benefit of never flopping over, like an improperly folded silk pocket square may.
To make her stunning pocket square designs, Melissa notes it is especially helpful to use artificial flowers.
“When Pioneer started carrying the pocket square design tool it made everything easier. I don’t have to worry about fabricating something out of cardboard like I was before,” she continued.
The two biggest design tips she had?
- Build it in layers. “Start with a base of greenery and build layers from there. Layering makes them look full. Make sure you’re using dimension. Use flowers of different sizes and shapes”
- Don’t be scared of going big. “When I first started, I only had floral peeking out of the pocket one-inch high. But, if you’re wearing the pocket square, you really want to stand out. Now I go almost two inches with larger accents.”
Like many trends, pocket square boutonnieres caught on with word of mouth and social media influence. “Pocket boutonniere” hit new heights in Google and Pinterest searches in spring 2023. In fact, of the people searching for “boutonniere” there is a breakout rise in those same people also querying “how to make a pocket boutonniere.” As online media influences our searches and results, be ready to accommodate these requests at your next wedding, prom or special occasion.
