Faux flowers vs real flowers - this is a battle that many Millennials and even Gen Y face in today’s modern age. These generations love personalization and have disposable income, so making something for them will help your long term business.
They’ve grown up with plants being a mainstay where they shop, either in mass market stores or illustrations of cacti and succulents adorning notebooks, t-shirts, and more. While younger customers may have a negative connotation with silk flowers, the key is to show them the benefits of lifelike florals and how they can add personal style to their space. And the best part is that they’re maintenance free! Go out at night, work late, take a trip, and still come home to your gorgeous décor that brings the outside in.
Before we dive deeper, we want to offer a tip - don’t call them silk! The word “silk” makes the flowers sound outdated and may deter Millennial buyers. We recommend using the term artificial, faux, or even permanent botanicals.
We put together a few ideas on how you can share faux floral design and style tips with your customers. Visualizing how it will look in a real space is half the battle, so demonstrating what it can look like in real life can influence buyers to purchase flowers, wreaths, artificial plants and more.
1. Put together a Pinterest board
Pinterest is a great way to share design inspiration that will help visualize how to decorate a space. You can create unique boards for each season, occasion, or even by product. Put together flowers and decor that you feel go well together and would recommend to a customer.
You can pull imagery and design ideas that use flowers, plants, and containers that you offer in your shop. We have most of our products on our Pinterest page which can help craft your boards.
Share the Pinterest boards on your social media channels or in your newsletter to reach customers.
2. Share our photos on your social media accounts
We arrange stylized photoshoots so you don’t have to! You can share our photos that are posted on our social media that feature products you’ve purchased for your shop. Share these posts to your Facebook feed or on your Instagram story to help tell that visual story.
Or if you like the arrangements that we put together in each of the photos, once you purchase the items for your shop you can pre-arrange them in your store to provide on-the-spot decor inspiration.
3. Conduct an Instagram contest that encourages customers to share product photos
If you don’t have the resources to arrange your own photoshoot and want some unique photography, use photos from the people who help you thrive - your customers! Challenge your followers to share photos of products that they’ve purchased from your shop. You may be surprised by the magic people can make with your products, and the best part is that you can share them on your own page down the road. Just make sure you ask the user for permission first.
There are a couple of simple steps on how to conduct a contest. Create a social media post letting people know about the contest, how to enter, any contest parameters and the prize that they could potentially win. We recommend making a rule to tag your business account in the post or story so you receive notifications of the entrants. Finally, choose your favorite photo and notify the winner that they are the winner.
Also, make sure to follow Instagram’s Promotion Guidelines if you decide to run a contest.
It’s easy to share design inspiration with your Millennial customers - you just have to get creative! Like the tips and tricks we’ve shared? Check out more of our blogs on our website for more design inspiration, education, new products, and more.
