Why a Great Website is a Must for Your Business

Why a Great Website is a Must for Your Business

I recently had a great discussion with Vonda LaFever, AIFD, PFCI and Lori Wilson, PFCI on The Business and Pleasure of Flowers podcast. We talked about how Pioneer’s website has grown over the years – its history, why a good website matters for business, and some user experience tips. It was a really fun conversation, and I wanted to share some of the main points.

A Look Back

I started helping out at Pioneer, my family's business, during summer breaks, mostly answering phones and taking orders. When I was in high school, back in the mid-to-late 90s, I realized I loved web design. The internet was just getting started then, and I knew Pioneer needed a website. So, I taught myself how to build one, bought a domain name, set up hosting, and put together our first site in 1999 using HTML. Things got easier as software improved, and now we’re on our fourth version.

Keeping a website running takes work. At Pioneer, we figure out what we need to improve, decide what's most important, plan a budget, and work with our IT team to make ongoing enhancements. This approach has helped us with our goal of becoming a lead e-commerce resource for the floral and event industry.

What We've Learned

If you're in business, a good website is a must. It shows who you are and what your business stands for. Make sure it's easy to use – customers don’t want to struggle. Good pictures, clear descriptions, and things like size comparisons (like showing something next to a soda can or ruler) help customers know exactly what they're getting. This is super important for people shopping from far away who rely on your site to see your story.

A good website isn’t just about making sales; it’s about connecting with your audience. Sharing helpful content is a smart move for attracting customers and boosting your search engine ranking. For example, a florist could share flower care tips, talk about local trends, or give seasonal ideas. Good content keeps people coming back and makes your online presence stronger.

One Last Thing

Don’t forget about security. Getting cybersecurity insurance is a smart way to protect your business from things like data breaches. And remember, your website is never really finished. Keep it updated with fresh content, new pictures, and the latest security features.

Investing in your website is investing in your business. A great site tells your story, brings in customers, and helps you make sales.

Until next time, Sarah Botchick
