As current trends include cascades of greenery unfurling down aisles, bannisters and entryways, the foliage consumers usually envision is ruscus. Though they may not know it by name, the narrow, wispy leaves and gracefully long sweeping vines creep into today’s themes, infusing events with aura of the natural outdoors.
Ruscus has also become increasingly important as consumers notice the filler flowers and foliage in arrangements. Those seeking a more personalized expression may resist traditional choices like leatherleaf ferns and baby’s breath. Noticing how the greenery aids in the overall presentation, florists using ruscus in arrangements are appealing to customers ranging from traditional, to bohemian, to modern.
Ruscus by Name
There are two origins of ruscus, each providing a different look.
Italian ruscus is a long, skinny vine with small leafy laterals. Italian ruscus is also commonly referred to as “butcher’s broom.”
Israeli ruscus is shorter and more compact, with slightly wider leaves. By comparison, it is dense like boxwood, but with longer leaves, for a willowier effect.
About Pioneer’s Ruscus
Developed by and exclusive to Pioneer, PWR2273GR is a botanically-correct version of Italian ruscus. With fabric leaves for softness and lifelike quality, the 22" long leaves breathe life into any display.

Faux Israeli ruscus is also available in stems, bushes, garlands and more. One the most versatile and easy to use foliages, the basic bush is made of 5 stems that further split, abundant with a dozen or more leaves.

About Our Ruscus Colors
Italian ruscus tends to be a darker green, while other varieties may be brighter or two-tone. Likewise, our ruscus selection provides both.
Additionally, in silk foliage, we can apply some creative license. While real ruscus does not change colors in autumn, it is easy to imagine this foliage could. Therefore, we applied the Italian ruscus shape and offer it in a brick red, to help bring the elegance to fall arrangements as well. Israeli ruscus bushes also come with an orange variant for a fall-effect.
About Ruscus Prices
While fresh ruscus is relatively economical, once cut, its lifespan is limited. With lifelike faux varieties, florists needn’t take the risk or stress that comes with fresh greenery, especially when it comes to event design. Having a reliable source for permanent greenery enables efficient scheduling of labor and design activities. Utilizing artificial greens reduces labor expenses by adhering to regular business hours and allows for gradual design progress over the course of days or weeks.
Fresh ruscus garlands can be extremely cost prohibitive to clients. According to florist Charity Bennitt, “an 8-foot garland will take 1-2 hours to make from start to finish.” When working on an entire event, the yards of garland add up fast, as does the labor.
For that reason, using lifelike artificial garlands or hanging bushes will be a life saver. If you’re uncertain about using permanent botanicals, consider combining fresh and faux in layers for a cost-effective and time-saving approach.
Other benefits of artificial garlands includes durability while being designed, transported and suspended. Pioneer even provides non-traditional shapes that help create cascading looks, including a garland with a fringe effect, as well as hanging bushes.
